Question: My sister is taking insulin to treat her diabetes, but she is concerned about the halal status of this insulin. What is the origin of the insulin sold in Malaysia?

21 November 2013

Answer: All insulin products sold in Malaysia (Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly) are manufactured using recombinant DNA technology. Therefore no animal products are used in the products. Originally, insulin was extracted from bovine (cow) and porcine (pig) sources but this practice has been phased out. It is only available in some less developed countries.

Diabetes Malaysia (formerly known as Persatuan Diabetes Malaysia) gives advice in good faith based on the limited information supplied by the questioner. It is no way responsible for any unintended consequences arising from such advice. All patients should be examined by a physician or specialist before undertaking any investigation or treatment.
