The more established State Branches organise regular counselling session, public forums and talks and issue publications to its members.
Diabetes Malaysia makes available products and equipment used by diabetics such as syringes, needles, blood glucose testing machine and test strips, urine test strips, to its members at prices which are below retail prices.
Diabetes Malaysia Council has been conducting monthly counselling sessions, free to the public. These 3 to 4 hours sessions are held at the various public and private hospitals situated within the Klang Valley, e.g. Universiti Hospital, Subang Jaya Medical Centre, Klang General Hospital, Banting District Hospital, Kajang District Hospital, Assunta Hospital, Kuala Lumpur General Hospital, City Medical Centre, etc. These sessions are conducted by a team comprising of a doctor, dietician and nurse. Each member of the team will talk on a selected topic and the session will end with question and answer.
Since July 1994, Diabetes Malaysia Council has been conducting free structured education classes for patients and paramedics. These classes will be a forum for patients and paramedics to up-date themselves with matters on diabetes education, patient care, etc. It is hoped that the participants will impart the knowledge gained to patients, their family members and others with the ultimate objective of improving the standard of patient care in Malaysia.
Diabetes Malaysia is working with other organisations to promote the formation of the ASEAN Diabetes Educators Association ("ADEA"). The ADEA, when formally established, will conduct courses for diabetes educators. It is envisaged that Diabetes Malaysia will have a role to play in the ADEA courses. The manual, "Diabetes Education For Health Professionals" was formally launched in Manila on December, 1995. The manual focussed on the certification requirement for the ASEAN Diabetes Educator and the core curriculum in Diabetes Education for Health Professionals.
